Mattress Guide
Mattress terminology explained.
Common terms you'll come across when choosing a new mattress, so you know exactly what you're buying.
Hand Tufted
Tufted mattresses have nylon tape running through them at regular intervals, secured by cotton rosettes. This keeps the mattress fillings in place, allows the springs to stay where they're intended, and keeps the layers of a mattress from shifting.
Pocket Sprung
Constructed with hundreds — sometimes thousands — of individual springs, each encased in its own fabric pocket and working independently. Each spring reacts only to the pressure applied to that particular area, contouring to your body shape and keeping your spine correctly aligned.
Orthopaedic / Back Care
Providing a firm, even surface, orthopaedic mattresses give targeted support for joints and back. Typically recommended for people who sleep with pain, those in active recovery from injury, seniors, and anyone who is very active.
Pillowtop
An additional layer of support — filled with memory foam, latex, or wool — either integrated within the top of the mattress or stitched on. Renowned for supporting sleep, especially for side sleepers needing hip and shoulder pressure relief.
Quilted
Quilted mattresses are covered in a fabric that's been quilted together to create a soft, comfortable surface with no appearance of tufts. The quilting adds thickness and softness to the top, and keeps the comfort layers from shifting.
Hybrid
Made up of a range of layers — memory foam, gel, or latex — alongside an innerspring system. You get the stability and support of pocket springs while enjoying the extra cushioning of your preferred comfort filling.
CRIB-5
A UK fire-safety standard for contract furniture. Our CRIB-5 mattresses are built to meet this standard, making them suitable for hospitality, care, and rental settings with stricter fire-retardancy requirements.
Tension & Firmness
A measure of how hard or soft a mattress feels. The right firmness promotes proper spinal alignment while cushioning sensitive areas — the best choice depends on body type, sleep position, and the level of support you need.
Edge Support
Also known as perimeter banding — the amount of resistance a mattress provides around its edges. Important for preventing sagging, and for providing stable support when sitting on the side of the bed.
Head-to-Toe Rotation
Regularly rotating your pocket sprung mattress from head-to-toe keeps it in great condition and prolongs its lifespan. Recommended at least once every three months.
UK Standard Sizes
Every mattress is available in these sizes.
European sizes available as well, and we do custom sizes too.
